The Tanzania Health & Humanitarian Fund (Tanzania HHF) is an organization of volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of Tanzanian children and adults.

After visiting Tanzania, the group teamed with a Tanzanian educator, a physician, and local religious leaders to support the medical, education, and missional needs of the Tanzanian people through contributions, partnerships and sponsorships. Ten members of the organization traveled to the East African country and discovered that:

  • Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world
  • malaria is the leading cause of death, affecting one-half of Tanzanians
  • there is only one doctor per 20,000 people
  • over 1.1 million children under age 15 are orphaned
  • malnutrition causes 50% of child mortality
  • the average age is 15; the average life expectancy is 46.

The Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia handles administrative, legal and tax issues for Tanzania HHF, thus freeing the organization to focus on identifying needs and fundraising. One hundred percent of all donations sent to PCF for the Tanzania HHF account go directly to a targeted need in Tanzania. All requests for assistance come directly from one of the group's established contacts in Tanzania. Donations to the organization are applied toward programs such as:

  • medicine and supplies for clinics - treatment of malaria and other diseases, transportation to clinics, refrigerators for storage of critical medicines and blood samples
  • education - $120 will provide a primary education for one orphan or other needy child for one year; $400 will pay university fees for one young adult
  • missional projects - provide supplies for construction projects, and occupational and educational programs; $1,000 supplies materials for a school, church or orphanage roof, and just $15 will purchase a sewing kit for a woman to generate income to feed her family
