jack poland scholarship fund
Jack Poland left his mark in many ways, but most profoundly he influenced the students at Tabb High School for over 25 years. This scholarship honors Jack, who was a teacher, director, swim coach, class sponsor, and most importantly, mentor to thousands of students at Tabb. He urged students to find their passion, be willing to work hard for it, and have fun while doing so. His musical productions are legendary for the work all students, actors and technicians alike, put into them to make them exceptional. Jack is also fondly remembered for the annual trip to New York City where he delighted in introducing students to the bright lights of Broadway, museums, and tourist attractions. A former student, Adam Abramson remarked, "Jack brought the arts to Tabb High School and Tabb High School to the arts."
One of Jack’s gifts was to seek out diverse students and involve them in drama. There were no high school cliques around Jack. Students who thought they were too timid to be in drama or just took the "easy" class became awed with the class and platform Jack provided for students to explore themselves in an environment that encouraged not coddled and allowed mistakes, but insisted on perseverance. Students learned to push their own boundaries, have courage to try new things, meet new people and above all, have the self-confidence to live life to its fullest.
It is in the spirit of pursuing one's passion, students who have been involved in at least 2 productions at Tabb and will continue their education post high school in either a 4 or 2-year college program or a technical/training program are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.
