The Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia Center for Community Research

Picture
For more than 15 years, community research has been a priority for PCF. Initially, our research focused on early childhood development. Our second major report focused on homelessness . And our third study - “Serving an Older Peninsula” released last year - focused on the needs, challenges and opportunities ahead for our community as we navigate significant growth in our older population over the next 25 years.

PCF took on community research because our leaders believed that research is a space in which community foundations can, and should, be leaders - to inform solutions across the communities we serve. Not only are we uniquely positioned for that work because of the “view from the  balcony” perspective we were created to maintain - we are also aware that other leaders in nonprofit or government or business or education have very specific priorities and perspectives they are charged with protecting and pursuing, so broadening their lens to take on research topics for the whole community is not necessarily prudent or even possible.
So, based on the success of our earlier research and the ongoing need for that community-wide perspective, PCF created the program banner the “Center for Community Research” under which we would pursue future research projects, embracing research as a priority for the Foundation moving forward, analyzing critical social issues, assessing community needs, and identifying opportunities for sustainable growth and development.

Key objectives of the Center for Community Research

1. Data-Driven Decision Making: The Center will leverage advanced research methodologies and data analytics to gain deeper insights into the region's challenges and opportunities. This information will inform the Foundation's programs and community partnerships, helping to guide resources to projects that have the most significant potential for lasting impact.
2. Collaborative Research Partnerships: To maximize the Center's reach and influence, the Foundation will establish partnerships with academic institutions, local organizations, local governments and subject matter experts. Through a collaborative approach, the Center will tackle multifaceted issues through diverse perspectives and expertise.
3. Addressing Critical Community Issues: In consult with our community partners, the Center will identify and prioritize research initiatives that address key societal issues. The goal is to contribute to the development of evidence-based solutions that create a more resilient and equitable community.
4. Education and Knowledge Sharing: In addition to conducting rigorous research, the Center will actively engage in education efforts and knowledge sharing through publications, workshops, and conferences. By disseminating research findings and best practices, the Center hopes to spark meaningful dialogue and inspire positive change on a broader scale - change in which we can be an active partner.
