arthur lee galloway, jr. scholarship fund

In February 2014, The Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia, Inc., partnered with the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc., to administer the Arthur Lee Galloway, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, named for First Lieutenant Arthur Lee Galloway, Jr., U.S. Army, killed in Vietnam in 1971.

Lee has been described as a natural leader, athlete, avid reader, and good friend with a great sense of humor. He believed in a sense of honor – in high school, college, and until the end of his life. As one of his VMI classmates described him, “this lanky, freckled-faced Virginian epitomized everything that was noble, and everything that was essential about VMI".

After graduating from VMI, Lee successfully completed US Army Airborne and Ranger schools prior to being assigned to lead a platoon in the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam. In May of 1971, in an action for which he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for valor in combat, Lee was killed while attempting to reach one of his men, who had been hit by enemy fire.
After his death, Lee’s platoon sent a donation to VMI for the purchase of books in their leader’s name. A letter sent by one of Lee’s commanders, Major Letchworth, to the president of VMI with the collected funds read: “This donation was the idea of the men he led, and it was their desire that it be used in a capacity related to your library. Lt. Galloway was an avid reader.”

Whether it is the memorial flagpole at Queen’s Lake swimming pool, where he had been a lifeguard, the York High School corridor outside the principal’s office, or the VMI library, which has a room dedicated to Lee and other VMI graduates killed in action in Vietnam those who knew Lee hope that people will see his name in these places for perpetuity and wonder about the person.

To this day, the memory and strong character of Lee lives on in the hearts and minds of his 1965 York High School fellow graduates who have memorialized him with a scholarship at YHS since the mid 1980’s. The Arthur Lee Galloway, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is available to a graduating York High School senior who plans on pursuing a post-secondary education. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving York High School graduating senior who exemplifies Lee’s traits of patriotism, sportsmanship, sense of humor, and a love of reading and journalism. This scholarship has been endowed by loving friends and family.
CRITERIA:
  1. Must be a York High School senior.
  2. Must have achieved a cumulative GPA minimum of 2.5 or higher.
  3. Must exemplify A. Lee Galloway’s traits of Patriotism, Athletics, Sense of Humor, and interest in Journalism and Reading.
  4. The total amount of this one-time award is $2,500, payable in full for the first semester.
