henry jordan memorial scholarship fund
The Henry Jordan Memorial Scholarship Fund was formally established with the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia in 2008. The scholarship was originally founded and managed in 1985 by a group of individuals who wished to perpetuate the memory of the 1953 Warwick High School graduate whose name it honors. The Fund provides an annual scholarship to a Warwick High School graduating senior to be used in pursuit of a college education. During his years at Warwick High School, Henry exhibited qualities of outstanding leadership and achievement in academics, athletics, citizenship, and extracurricular activities.
In college, Henry was a Dean's List student at the University of Virginia. He was captain of the Cavalier Football Team, and national runner-up in the NCM Wrestling Championships for his weight class in 1956. Henry was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1957, and traded to the Green Bay Packers in 1959. It was with the Packers, under the legendary coach Vince Lombardi, that he achieved AII-Pro status as a defensive tackle for four of his thirteen years in the NFL, named as All-NFL for six years, was honored as Pro Bowl MVP in 1961, and was a member of the winning Packers in Super Bowls I and II. |
In 1974, Henry was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Jordan died of a heart attack on February 21, 1977, at age of 42. He was posthumously elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in 1995.
