PENINSULA scholarship fund
The Peninsula Scholarship Fund was established with the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia in 2012. The fund is a gift from Carolyn Pendeleton Lackey, a lifelong resident of the peninsula. Carolyn Pendeleton Lackey (Video) established the scholarship fund through her will so that young people in our community would have the opportunity to succeed. The fund provides annual scholarships to Virginia Peninsula students of high academic achievement (having maintained a minimum of a “B” average).
The applicants must be in need of financial aid for post-secondary education at a four-year college or university. The Virginia Peninsula includes: Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County. Carolyn Pendeleton Lackey worked for many years at Ft. Monroe as a Librarian. She was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, and a former member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads. Ms. Lackey was born in Newport News on Feb. 19, 1927, to the late Howard Lackey and Ruth Grandy Lackey. She grew up in Hampton and Newport News and attended Newport News High School, Greenbrier College and Virginia Commonwealth University. |
Ms. Lackey was a generous supporter of local charities. She also believed in youth and in giving back to her community. Carolyn Pendeleton Lackey will be remembered as an honest, hard-working woman who loved to laugh and joke and was always positive and upbeat about life.
