julie m. sager memorial scholarship fund

Picture
In March 2013, the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia, Inc., partnered with the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc., to administer the Julie M. Sager Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Julie M. Sager Memorial Scholarship is named for Tabb Elementary School teacher Julie M. Sager, who taught elementary students for eighteen years before passing away in early 2013 after a six year battle with cancer.

The Julie M. Sager Memorial Scholarship is available to any senior at Tabb, York, Bruton or Grafton High Schools who plans on pursuing a career in the field of education. This scholarship is a non-renewable $1000 award.

Mrs. Sager taught Kindergarten and Third grade at Tabb Elementary School. While at Tabb, she worked with leaders from Tabb High to create the “Tabb Tiger Friends” program, a
mentorship program that helped prospective teachers volunteer in the local schools. Mrs. Sager also created a K-Kids Club at Tabb Elementary, a Kiwanis club for elementary students that demonstrated to students the importance of helping others in the community. Additionally, Mrs. Sager taught the Odyssey of the Mind team at Tabb Elementary and traveled with one of her teams to the World Championship.

Julie Sager was the 2004 Tabb Teacher of the Year and the YCSD Elementary School Division Teacher of the Year. She was the recipient of the 2000 Apple Award – Tabb Elementary, and was selected for the Who’s Who of American Teachers Award for 2000-2001.
Throughout her battle with cancer, Mrs. Sager continued to teach and was a proud part of Tabb Elementary School’s Relay for Life, Paws for a Cause, and participated in numerous relay events at Tabb High School.

Julie Sager believed in the importance of a good education and prided herself on giving children the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for long-term success. Her passion in life was helping others and the children, parents, and her colleagues at Tabb Elementary meant a great deal to her and gave her strength and encouragement. Her husband and three daughters established this scholarship in memory of Julie Sager and her passion for educating children. It is their hope that Mrs. Sager’s commitment to educating the youth in York County will live on with the support this scholarship will provide for future teachers.

CRITERIA:
1.   Must be a senior at Tabb, York, Bruton or Grafton High Schools interested in majoring in Education in college.
2.  Must have a minimum 2.75 overall GPA.
3.  The total amount of this one-time award is $1,000, payable in full for the first semester.
4.   Deadline to apply is April 13, 2023.
