Kenneth Leary Taylor Teacher grant
Kenneth Taylor, born and raised in Newport News, is a graduate of Newport News High and Virginia Tech. His parents, Virginia Leary and Winston Taylor worked very hard to send Kenneth to school and were very proud of his accomplishments at becoming a college graduate. Following graduation, he was hired by Hampton City Schools as a 9th grade physical science teacher at Spratley Jr. High.
After 36 years as an educator, his career concluded as an 8th grade physical science teacher at Davis Middle School. Mr. Taylor found physical science to be an exciting course to teach, devoting one semester to chemistry and another semester to physics. He was able to perform many classroom demonstrations and also provide many hands on activities to |
enhance the experience for his students. He wanted his students to enjoy coming to science class and gaining scientific knowledge about our world.
In August of 2023, he established the Kenneth Leary Taylor Teacher Grant at the Peninsula Community Foundation in hopes of helping other teachers from elementary through high school that share his passion of teaching science in their classrooms, by providing grants of up to $500 toward a current project, program, or equipment that will enhance the classroom curriculum.
Eligibility Requirements:
Must be teaching science (excluding Computer Science) to students elementary-high school, on the Virginia Peninsula.
Must have a specific project or program otherwise not funded by the schools. General classroom supplies are excluded.
